The challenge with restoring historic ironwork is that traditional cleaning methods all risk damaging or destroying the original surface. Sandblasting, chemical stripping, and wire brushing each take something off the piece that cannot be put back. For pieces that are 100, 150, or 200 years old, that risk is simply too high.

On-Site Assessment
We inspect the ironwork in person, assess the type and extent of rust or oxidation, and confirm laser cleaning is appropriate for the specific piece and its condition.
Surface Preparation
We set up safety perimeters and protect surrounding surfaces including brickwork, stonework, and plantings before beginning work.
Laser Cleaning
Our 300W JPT MOPA pulsed fiber laser removes rust, oxidation, and old paint layer by layer. Parameters are adjusted based on the specific material and condition of each piece.
Surface Inspection
We inspect the cleaned surface and confirm the result before completing the job. Before and after photos are taken for your records.
Painter Referral (if needed)
Bare iron in Charleston's salt air environment will begin to re-rust without a protective coating. We work with local painting contractors and can refer you to a trusted partner for same-day primer application.

Common Questions
Is laser cleaning safe for historic wrought iron?
Yes, it is one of the gentler options available. Corrosion and coatings come off without mechanical contact, so tool marks, hand-forged texture, and maker's details survive the process. Nothing abrasive touches the surface and no chemical soaks into the metal.
Will it damage the patina on antique ironwork?
The process is adjustable, so we set it to the outcome you want. Some owners want corrosion removed and the aged surface kept, others want bare metal before recoating. We agree on that before starting and test a small area first.
Do you work on properties under Board of Architectural Review oversight?
We work throughout the historic district and are familiar with the constraints. Work on a designated property should be cleared with the BAR or your preservation consultant first, and we can provide a written description of the method for that submission.
How does this compare to sandblasting historic iron?
Sandblasting removes base metal along with rust, rounds off crisp forged edges, and drives media into joints and surrounding masonry. On irreplaceable ironwork that damage cannot be undone. Laser cleaning removes only the surface layer and leaves the original profile intact.
Can you clean ironwork that is still mounted?
Yes, and usually that is preferable. Gates, railings, balconies, and fence panels are cleaned in place, which avoids the risk of damage during removal and reinstallation and avoids disturbing the masonry the ironwork is set into.
